Holiday time!!

I finished work yesterday and skipped out the back door right on 4.30 pm, not to come back for another 6 months. My work mates have promised to be out on the road to welcome us all home on September 2nd.

The adventure is ahead of us and it is starting to be a little scary. What lies ahead is anyone's guess but hopefully we all stay safe and no-one comes off their bikes, no-one gets eaten by a crocodile or bitten by a snake or attacked by an emu. We have placed all possible precautions in place and we will warn all riders of the hazards in front of us but it will ultimately be the responsibility of the riders to look out for themselves and each other.

In the history of Cycle Across Oz, (6 long distance rides) we have had:
# many minor tumbles off bikes which resulted in no physical injuries but a few injured prides (especially if someone saw them),
# one cyclist was blown off the road by a road train getting too close resulting in a bad graze and a broken rib,
# one squashed cane toad under the foot of a rider- rider OK,
# no crocodile sightings- riders disappointed,
# lots of snakes on the roads but none in the bush- no snake bites,
# a few races with emus that like to run next to the bike but will suddenly change course and shoot in front of the rider- no collisions with bikes but many with cars and Collis has had to put one emu out of it's misery after being hit by a car/truck.
# lots of sore bottoms- those seats have teeth, take care
# occasional dehydration and lots of cramping muscles- drink, drink drink.

Hopefully our great safe riding history will continue but like I said before, you never know and that is all part of the adventure.

The cyclists have been provided with all phone numbers, websites and emergency information for their own use and to pass on to their family & friends.

This week is going to be full on and Collis has started his nightly wanderings around the house, sending off late night emails and generally keeping me awake.

I can't wait for the journey to actually begin.
